Culture Department Holds Meeting on Vikshit Odisha 2036 and Vikshit Bharat 2047: Focus on Culture & Heritage

Bhubaneswar: The Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture held a significant meeting today at the Lok Seva Bhawan Convention Center to discuss the preparation of the vision document titled “Vikshit Odisha 2036 and Vikshit Bharat 2047: Culture and Heritage.” The session was chaired by the department’s Principal Secretary, Bishnupada Sethi, and brought together prominent cultural scholars, artists, and literary figures to chart the future course of Odisha’s cultural and heritage preservation.

In his opening address, Sethi welcomed the distinguished participants and emphasized the importance of promoting Odisha’s rich cultural heritage. “Odisha is globally recognized for its Jagannath culture, art, and architecture,” Shri Sethi said. “The state’s tradition, folk arts, music, dance, drama, and the cultural heritage of its tribal communities require extensive promotion, and the department is committed to this cause.”

He underscored the need for continuous efforts to ensure that Odisha’s cultural heritage plays a central role in realizing the vision of a developed Odisha by 2036 and a developed India by 2047. The document will place a special focus on these cultural elements, positioning them as key contributors to future development.

Prominent archaeologist and scholar, Professor Kishore K Basa, addressed the gathering and highlighted the potential for Odisha’s historical tourism sites to gain international recognition. He also advocated for the global promotion of Odissi music, the publication of an Odia encyclopedia, and the enhancement of the global reach of Odia films, folk dances, and traditional art forms such as Pattachitra. “By integrating culture with daily life and livelihood,” Professor Basa said, “Odisha and India can achieve their development goals.”

The consultation saw active participation from various cultural icons, including Padma Shri awardees and recipients of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and Sahitya Akademi awards. Ideas were exchanged on how Odia culture and heritage could contribute to the development goals outlined in the vision documents. The discussions also focused on organizing cultural forums at district, state, and national levels, promoting traditional festivals, and ensuring the preservation of Odisha’s forts, caves, and historical sites.

Key topics included establishing cultural and heritage centers, supporting local cottage industries, and promoting Kandhei dance and traditional handicrafts through exhibitions and festivals. Several participants stressed the importance of preserving and enhancing the visibility of Odisha’s rich literary and artistic traditions through modern platforms and cultural events.

The Director of the Culture Department, Bijay Ketan Upadhyay, reaffirmed the department’s dedication to preserving and promoting Odia culture and heritage. He assured that the department would act on the valuable insights and suggestions shared during the meeting, moving towards creating a robust plan for Vikshit Odisha 2036 and Vikshit Bharat 2047.
