Coal India Limited Launches CSR Initiative ‘CIL ASHIS’ to Support Children Orphaned by COVID-19

New Delhi: To uphold its commitment to community welfare, Coal India Limited (CIL) has launched a commendable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative named ‘CIL ASHIS’ (Ayushman Shiksha Sahayata). The program aims to provide scholarships to 1,645 children who lost their parents to COVID-19 and are struggling to continue their education. Additionally, CIL distributed appointment letters to 424 beneficiaries under a compassionate appointment scheme for families who lost members during service. These jobs aim to support bereaved families in their time of need.

The scholarships and appointment letters were distributed during an event held at the Supreme Court of India today, marking the 75th anniversary of the institution. The Chief Justice of India, Dr. Justice Dhananjay Y Chandrachud, and the guest of honor, Union Minister of State for Law & Justice (Independent Charge), Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, officiated the distribution. The event was part of a special Lok Adalat session organized by the Chief Justice from July 29 to August 3, 2024, aimed at settling pending cases.

During the special program, dummy cheques for scholarships were handed over to 25 children, and 10 compassionate appointment letters were given to female dependents by the dignitaries. The event saw the attendance of judges, senior advocates, court officials, delegates from the Ministry of Coal and Ministry of Law & Justice, and senior management from CIL and its subsidiary companies.

Under the CIL ASHIS scheme, eligible children will receive a scholarship worth ₹45,000 per year for four years, enabling them to complete their education and pursue their dreams. The beneficiaries were identified by various High Courts based on available records.

The contribution of Coal India Limited to community service was highly praised during the event, reflecting the organization’s dedication to social responsibility and support for vulnerable sections of society.
