Chief Secretary of Odisha Urges Plastic-Free Picnics for a Greener Tomorrow

Bhubaneswar: As the season for picnics approaches, Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena urges the residents of the state to embrace eco-friendly practices by having a plastic-free picnic. To further this initiative, the State Pollution Control Board and the ‘Youth for Water’ social organization are jointly spearheading a comprehensive statewide awareness campaign titled ‘Plastic Free Picnic.’ The campaign has garnered support from environmentally conscious individuals, civil society, and voluntary organizations who are actively engaged in organizing awareness programs at various levels.

Encouraging everyone to participate in this commendable initiative, Chief Secretary Jena emphasizes that adopting eco-friendly practices during picnics will not only contribute to a greener and healthier environment but will also instill a sustainable mindset among the younger generation for the benefit of future generations.

Highlighting the significance of taking on the role of protectors of Mother Nature, he advises individuals heading to natural spots or tourist destinations during the New Year to opt for reusable materials. He urges the avoidance of single-use plastics and recommends the use of green alternatives such as plates and cups made from compostable or biodegradable materials, including leaves. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of cleaning up the picnic spot after use and disposing of waste at designated locations to maintain a litter-free environment.

He appealed to everyone to become Green Picnic Ambassadors and propagate this message to their friends and family.

Renowned environmentalist Ranjan Panda, the pioneer of the Plastic Free Campaign, remarks, “While enjoying a picnic, taking small steps to ensure cleanliness by avoiding plastic waste can make a significant impact.” This call for a Plastic Free Picnic aligns with the broader goal of fostering a collective commitment to environmental sustainability.
