New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved three key railway projects with a combined outlay of ₹7,927 crore. These projects, aimed at easing congestion and enhancing connectivity on some of the busiest rail corridors, are expected to significantly boost regional development and promote economic self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat).
The approved projects include:
- A fourth line on the Jalgaon–Manmad route (160 km).
- Third and fourth lines on the Bhusawal–Khandwa route (131 km).
- A third line on the Prayagraj (Iradatganj)–Manikpur route (84 km).
These multi-tracking projects span seven districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, adding approximately 639 kilometers to the existing rail network. They also enhance connectivity to two aspirational districts, Khandwa and Chitrakoot, impacting around 1,319 villages and benefiting a population of approximately 38 lakh.
The projects align with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, fostering seamless movement of people, goods, and services. Enhanced capacity will facilitate the operation of additional passenger and freight trains, thereby improving efficiency and reducing congestion.
The upgraded Mumbai–Prayagraj–Varanasi corridor will directly benefit pilgrims visiting sacred sites, including Nashik’s Trimbakeshwar, Khandwa’s Omkareshwar, Varanasi’s Kashi Vishwanath, and Prayagraj. Tourists will also enjoy improved access to attractions like Khajuraho, Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Devgiri Fort, and Keoti Falls, boosting regional tourism.
In addition to passenger benefits, these routes are vital for transporting key commodities, including agricultural produce, fertilizers, coal, steel, and cement. The capacity enhancement is expected to generate additional freight traffic of 51 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), reducing logistics costs and promoting economic growth.
Environmental benefits are a key aspect of the projects, with the expected reduction of CO₂ emissions by 271 crore kilograms annually, equivalent to planting 11 crore trees. The railways’ energy-efficient and eco-friendly mode of transport aligns with India’s climate goals.
These infrastructure developments are integral to the government’s vision of creating a “New India” and fostering holistic growth in the region, providing both employment opportunities and sustainable development.
