Cabinet Approves ₹1,750 Crore Investment for Tato-I Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a ₹1,750 crore investment for the construction of the Tato-I Hydroelectric Project (HEP) in the Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh. The project, with an installed capacity of 186 MW (3×62 MW), is expected to be completed in 50 months.

The Tato-I HEP is designed to generate 802 million units (MU) of energy annually, significantly bolstering power supply in Arunachal Pradesh while contributing to the stability of the national grid.

The project will be executed by a joint venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. To support this initiative, the central government has allocated ₹77.37 crore for infrastructure, including roads and bridges, and ₹120.43 crore as financial assistance for the state’s equity share in the project.

Local communities stand to gain substantial benefits, including 12% free power from the project and an additional 1% allocated to the Local Area Development Fund (LADF). Infrastructure improvements, such as 10 kilometers of new roads and bridges, will enhance connectivity and be accessible for local use.

Dedicated project funds of ₹15 crore will support the development of essential facilities, including hospitals, schools, vocational training institutes like ITIs, marketplaces, and playgrounds. These initiatives are expected to drive socio-economic growth in the region.

In addition to infrastructure enhancements, the project will create employment opportunities, offer compensations, and fund Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, ensuring the active involvement and benefit of the local populace.

The Tato-I HEP reflects the government’s commitment to harnessing the hydroelectric potential of the northeastern region while fostering sustainable development, improved living standards, and energy security in Arunachal Pradesh and beyond.
