Bus Accident in Assam’s Hailakandi District Leaves 25 Injured, Mostly Children

Silchar: A tragic bus accident unfolded on Tuesday morning in Assam’s Hailakandi district, resulting in nearly 25 individuals, predominantly children, sustaining injuries after the vehicle rolled off National Highway 37, as confirmed by the police.

The mishap occurred when a bus carrying students and teachers from Katakhal Public School was en route to a picnic. According to police reports, 20 of the 25 injured individuals were students, with four of them being referred to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for further medical attention.

Samir Baruah, the Additional Superintendent of Police for Hailakandi district, mentioned ongoing investigations into the incident. The accident transpired in the Katakhal area around 10:30 am when a cyclist suddenly emerged in the path of the bus. In an attempt to avoid the cyclist, the bus driver swerved, colliding with another vehicle before losing control and rolling off the highway.

Responding swiftly, a team comprising Hailakandi police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel reached the accident site, rescuing the injured individuals. They were promptly transported to a nearby hospital, with four of them subsequently referred to SMCH for specialized medical care. As investigations continue, authorities aim to ascertain the precise circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.
