Bhitarkanika National Park to Remain Closed from May 1 for Crocodile Breeding Season

Bhubaneswar: Bhitarkanika National Park, known for its population of giant saltwater crocodiles, will remain closed to tourists from May 1 to July 31 to facilitate the annual breeding and nesting season of the reptiles.

The closure order has been issued by the Rajnagar Forest Division to ensure a disturbance-free habitat during this critical period. Officials said the restriction is necessary as crocodiles begin nesting in rivers, creeks, and other water bodies across the park.

During this time, female crocodiles lay eggs and exhibit highly aggressive behaviour while guarding their nests. Authorities noted that any human interference could disrupt the breeding cycle and pose risks to both wildlife and visitors.

The temporary ban on tourism is aimed at protecting the reptiles and ensuring the safe incubation of eggs. Visitors have been advised to avoid planning trips to the park during the three-month period.

Bhitarkanika National Park is one of Odisha’s eco-tourism destinations, drawing thousands of tourists annually, particularly in the winter season, for its rich mangrove ecosystem and crocodile sightings. The park will reopen to visitors after the completion of the nesting season.
