BDA to Redevelop Two Major Crematoriums in Bhubaneswar for Dignified Last Rites

Bhubaneswar: In a step towards creating cleaner, greener, and more dignified public spaces for last rites, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has launched the redevelopment of two major crematoriums at Kaligadia and Garabadu in the Old Town area of the city. The foundation stones for both projects were laid today by MLA (Ekamra) Babu Singh.

The redevelopment works will be executed by BDA with the goal of improving infrastructure, enhancing environmental surroundings, and providing better facilities for the community. The Kaligadia crematorium will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹2.21 crore, while the Garabadu crematorium will be redeveloped at a cost of ₹1.85 crore.

According to project details, both crematoriums will feature parking areas, boundary walls, security kiosks, staff and caretaker rooms, separate changing rooms for men and women, waiting halls, pyre wood storage areas, and cremation platforms (pindis). To ensure a serene and hygienic atmosphere, water bodies, internal pathways, peripheral drains, and landscaped areas will also be developed around the premises.

The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by local Corporators, BDA Secretary Manas Ranjan Padhi, and other senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana urged local residents to cooperate for the timely completion of both projects. He also shared that the BDA is currently developing another modern crematorium at Dumuduma, aimed at expanding civic amenities across the capital.

These redevelopment projects reflect the state government’s commitment to ensuring dignified and accessible facilities for the deceased and their families. As Bhubaneswar continues its transformation as a Smart City, such initiatives reinforce the city’s focus on cleanliness, compassion, and respect — even in life’s most solemn moments.
