Bangladesh Army Chief Announces Interim Government Led by Muhammad Yunus

Dhaka: To restore stability, Bangladeshi Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced on Wednesday that Nobel Laureate and economist Muhammad Yunus will head an interim government. This interim administration is set to be sworn in on Thursday night at 8 pm local time and will include a 15-member advisory council.

Addressing the media, General Waker-Uz-Zaman assured that the situation across Bangladesh is improving and normalcy is expected to return within the next few days. He emphasized that those responsible for recent unrest would face legal action.

The political shift follows President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s dissolution of Parliament on Tuesday, triggered by the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday. Hasina, who had been in power since 2009, left for India amid escalating protests.

Nahid Islam, a prominent figure in the anti-quota protests, has been instrumental in the formation of the interim government. He, along with President Shahabuddin and Army Chief Zaman, discussed the new government’s structure on Tuesday evening.
