Bangladesh Appoints Najmul Hossain Shanto as New Captain Across All Formats

Dhaka:  In a strategic move, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced Najmul Hossain Shanto as the new captain for all three formats of the game. The decision comes ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place in the USA and West Indies later this year. BCB president Nazmul Hassan stated that Shanto has been given the captaincy for a year.

Shanto showcased his leadership prowess during the two-match Test series against New Zealand, where Bangladesh managed to draw 1-1 at home in November-December 2023. His stint as captain continued during the away tour against New Zealand, resulting in a win each in the ODI and T20I series.

Impressing in a short span, Shanto boasts three wins in 11 matches as the skipper, setting a positive trajectory for Bangladesh cricket under his leadership.

The newly appointed captain takes the reins from Shakib Al Hasan, who led the team in white-ball formats. Shakib, a key figure in Bangladesh cricket, is currently dealing with a retinal condition. The medical team is confident in managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach.

Najmul Hossain Shanto’s appointment aligns with Bangladesh’s commitment to grooming a new generation of leaders, bringing fresh perspectives to the team. As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the T20 World Cup later this year, Shanto is set to guide Bangladesh with a mix of experience and youthful enthusiasm.

In addition to the captaincy announcement, the BCB also revealed the appointment of Gazi Ashraf Hossain as the new chief selector. These changes aim to bring renewed vigor and strategic direction to Bangladesh cricket, ushering in a new era for the team across all formats. The cricketing fraternity eagerly awaits the performances and innovations under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto.
