Bhubaneswar: Balangir Railway Station in Odisha’s Balangir district has been redeveloped into a modern passenger-friendly transport hub under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) at an estimated cost of ₹20 crore. The upgraded station, which blends modern infrastructure with the cultural identity of western Odisha, is among the railway stations that will be dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17.
The redevelopment aims to enhance passenger convenience, improve rail connectivity and support the socio-economic growth of the region. The station has been equipped with a new station building, a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) with a lift for barrier-free access, widened approach roads, upgraded platforms and platform shelters, improved waiting halls, modern toilet facilities and standardised passenger information systems. Circulating and parking areas have also been redesigned to facilitate smoother passenger movement.
Reflecting the rich heritage of western Odisha, the station’s architecture incorporates motifs inspired by Sambalpuri handloom, traditional Dhokra metal craft and tribal art forms, giving the station a distinct regional character while showcasing the cultural legacy of Balangir.
Officials said the redevelopment is part of Indian Railways’ efforts to transform railway stations into modern public spaces that combine improved passenger amenities with local heritage. The upgraded station is expected to strengthen connectivity for the district’s growing commercial, educational and tourism sectors, while creating new opportunities for regional development.
Balangir Railway Station is among the 59 stations in Odisha being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and is one of the stations scheduled to be dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister on July 17, 2026.
