Australia Announced as ‘Country of Focus’ at 55th International Film Festival of India in Goa

New Delhi: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has announced that Australia will be the “Country of Focus” at the 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held in Goa from November 20 to November 28, 2024. This prestigious recognition highlights Australia’s significant contributions to global cinema, honoring its dynamic storytelling, rich film culture, and innovative cinematic techniques. The recognition also reflects the deepening collaboration between India and Australia, which are already signatories to an Audio Visual Co-production Treaty.

Country of Focus at IFFI

The “Country of Focus” section is a prominent feature of IFFI, spotlighting a nation’s finest contemporary films. Australia’s selection this year celebrates its vibrant cinematic heritage and its influence on global filmmaking. The showcase underscores the growing relationship between the Indian and Australian film industries, setting the stage for increased co-productions and collaborations.

Showcase of Australian Films

IFFI will feature a specially curated lineup of seven Australian films, ranging from critically acclaimed dramas to thought-provoking documentaries, thrilling visual spectacles, and light-hearted comedies. These films will offer a glimpse into Australia’s cultural identity, reflecting the diverse stories of its indigenous and modern communities.

Australian Participation in Film Bazaar

Australia will also have a notable presence at the Film Bazaar, South Asia’s largest film market, which runs alongside IFFI. A strong delegation from Screen Australia, State Screen Commissions, and Ausfilm will promote Australian locations and filming incentives in a special Film Office exhibition area. Six Australian producers, backed by government funding, will attend the Film Bazaar to explore co-production opportunities with Indian filmmakers. A special “Australian Co-production Day” will foster networking between film professionals from both nations. Notably, the Australian project Home Before Night will be one of the official entries in the Co-Production Market.

Australia-India Co-Production Panel Discussion

In recognition of the growing ties between the two film industries, IFFI will feature a panel discussion dedicated to exploring co-production opportunities. This session, part of the Knowledge Series, will bring together producers and industry experts from both countries to discuss creative and logistical strategies for successful co-productions.

Master Class by John Seale

A highlight of this year’s festival will be a Cinematography Master Class led by Academy Award-winning Australian cinematographer John Seale, renowned for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road and The English Patient. Seale will share insights into his artistic process and technical expertise, providing valuable lessons for budding filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts.

As one of Asia’s most prestigious film festivals, IFFI continues to serve as a global platform for filmmakers to showcase their work. With Australia as the “Country of Focus” for 2024, the festival promises to offer an enriching experience, fostering cultural exchange and promoting world-class cinematic art.

Founded in 1952, IFFI remains a beacon of excellence in the world of cinema, attracting filmmakers, producers, and film lovers from around the globe to celebrate the best of world cinema.
