Assam Government Champions Indigenous Languages in School Education

Guwahati: In a significant move to preserve and promote the rich linguistic heritage of Assam’s tribal communities, the state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has decided to introduce six tribal languages as mediums of instruction (MoI) in the foundational stage of school education. This initiative aligns with the provisions outlined in the National Education Policy, 2020, emphasizing the need to safeguard the interests of tribal communities.

The decision was formalized during a cabinet meeting convened at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma elaborated on the plan, stating that Rabba, Karbi, Tiwa, Deori, and Dimasa, encompassing the linguistic diversity of the region, would serve as mediums of instruction during the foundational stage of school education. Subsequently, there will be a transition to a regional language as the medium of instruction.

Furthermore, the state cabinet endorsed the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, recognizing Manipuri as an Associate Official Language in four districts – Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai. This acknowledgment reflects the government’s commitment to linguistic inclusivity and cultural diversity.

In another development, the establishment of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University received approval. This university will emerge through the bifurcation of the faculty of Veterinary Science, Assam Agriculture University, Khanapara, and the College of Fisheries Science, Raha, from the Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat.

The Assam government’s proactive measures underscore its dedication to fostering linguistic diversity, providing quality education rooted in indigenous languages, and recognizing the importance of regional languages in official communication. These initiatives are poised to contribute significantly to the cultural and educational landscape of the state.
