APEDA and Arunachal Pradesh Host International Conclave to Boost Agri-Exports from Northeast India

Tawang: In a significant push to unlock the agri-export potential of Northeast India, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), in collaboration with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, organized an International Conclave cum Buyer-Seller Meet (IBSM) at the Kalawangpo Convention Hall in Tawang. The initiative aimed to enhance market access and global outreach for agricultural and processed food products from Arunachal Pradesh and the broader North-Eastern Region (NER).

The event brought together a dynamic mix of policymakers, international buyers, Indian exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and over 350 farmers, opening new avenues for trade, collaboration, and investment.

In his keynote address, Chief Minister Pema Khandu reaffirmed his government’s commitment to developing the agriculture and allied sectors, empowering rural communities, and driving women-led development. He emphasized the immense potential of exporting Geographical Indication (GI) tagged and indigenous produce such as Khaw Tai (Khamti) Rice, Mandarin Oranges, Kiwi, Apples, Persimmons, and Yak Cheese (Churpi) to Southeast Asian and ASEAN markets. Encouraging both domestic and international stakeholders, he stated, “Arunachal Pradesh is ready to be a gateway for agri-business, and we invite the world to explore our untapped potential.”

State Agriculture Minister Gabriel Denwang Wangsu underscored the need to raise awareness and build the capacity of local farmers to ensure they receive fair prices in both domestic and international markets. He lauded the farmers of Arunachal for their dedication to cultivating premium produce, including value-added products like wine and walnuts.

APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev highlighted the importance of identifying and promoting Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) from Arunachal for participation in national and international trade fairs. He reiterated APEDA’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with the state government for infrastructure development, branding, training, and global promotion of Arunachal’s agricultural and processed products.

The Conclave facilitated direct business interactions between 11 international buyers from the UAE, Nepal, and Bhutan with 17 Indian exporters from seven states and union territories including Assam, Maharashtra, Delhi, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Gujarat, and West Bengal. Exporters also connected with over 50 local FPOs to understand production capabilities and quality standards of the region’s produce.

Discussions covered key sectors such as organic farming, millets, honey, fresh fruits and vegetables, processed foods, spices, and tea, positioning Arunachal Pradesh as a future hub for premium agri-products in the international market.

The conclave aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Viksit North East”, with collaborative efforts underway across the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and APEDA.
