Bhubaneswar: In a bid to give major boost to the sports sector and increase sporting infrastructure in the state, the cabinet on Monday approved setting up of 89 multi-purpose indoor stadiums across the state with an estimated cost of Rs 693.35 Crores.
The construction of these structures named as ‘Biju Pattnaik Indoor Stadiums’ will be carried out under the ‘Urban Sports Infrastructure Development Project’ and has been given an 18-months deadline for completion.
Along with being used for sporting activities, these multi-purpose indoor stadiums will also be put to service as community shelters during cyclones and flood and as field hospitals during health emergencies. These sports infrastructures will come up in 89 locations in as many urban local bodies across the state, which don’t have quality sporting infrastructures.
Since Odisha is prone to natural disasters like cyclone and flood, the indoor stadiums will be resistant to such calamities. These structures will withstand wind speed up to 200 km per hour. These stadiums can also be used for various other purposes like training, meeting, examination centre and more.
