Bhubaneswar: In a commanding display of prowess, Odisha FC emerged victorious in the Odisha Derby of the Indian Women’s Football League (IWL), defeating Sports Odisha 3-1 at the Capital Football Arena on Sunday. The title contenders showcased their dominance from the kickoff, securing a 2-0 lead at halftime.
The clash, dubbed the Odisha Derby on paper, unfolded as a stark mismatch between the table-toppers and a struggling Sports Odisha side. The outcome reflected the evident gulf in class, as Odisha FC asserted their superiority, consolidating their position at the top of the league table with 19 points from seven matches. In contrast, Sports Odisha continued their struggle at the bottom with a meager two points from eight outings.
With a formidable lineup boasting nine internationals, Odisha FC dictated the proceedings on every inch of the pitch. The opening goal materialized in the eighth minute when Indumathi Kathiresan, making a skillful run down the left flank, delivered a precise cross into the six-yard box. Lynda Kom capitalized on the unchallenged opportunity, effortlessly slotting the ball into the net.
Despite their dominance, Odisha FC had to wait until the add-on time of the first half for their second goal. Surprisingly, Sports Odisha failed to mount any significant challenge, leaving the Odisha FC goalkeeper Shreya Hooda with little to do.
Sports Odisha, however, managed to breach Odisha FC’s formidable defense in the second half, with Manisha Naik narrowing the deficit. This marked only the second goal conceded by Odisha FC in the entire campaign. In the latter half of the match, Sports Odisha exhibited a more spirited performance, pressing the opposition’s defenders and posing a more serious threat.
Nonetheless, Odisha FC remained unfazed, holding on to their comfortable lead secured by two goals from Myanmar striker Win Theingi Tun. Win’s clinical finishing proved too much for the Sports Odisha defense to handle, as she expertly maneuvered to beat goalkeeper Adrija Sarkhel on both occasions.
