New Delhi: A pivotal moment in the trajectory of the National Quantum Mission (NQM) unfolded as Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), officially initiated the call for pre-proposals to establish Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs). This groundbreaking event occurred on January 20, 2024, during the 9th edition of the India International Science Festival.
The pre-proposal beckons academic institutions and research and development labs to submit innovative proposals in consortium mode, aligning with the NQM’s objectives to establish T-Hubs in Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices.
Professor Abhay Karandikar, while launching the call, emphasized the significance of this step in the National Quantum Mission, approved by the Cabinet last year. He expressed optimism about substantial progress in the coming months, emphasizing collaboration with industry and startups to translate research into deployable technologies. The DST pledged essential resources to support successful submissions and facilitate researchers, positioning India competitively on the global stage.
“The spirit of collaboration in the mission could help make a meaningful impact at the national and global level,” highlighted Professor Karandikar.
The pre-proposals are expected to showcase quantum technologies that advance the application of quantum science and technology. Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Adviser DST and Secretary SERB, provided detailed insights into the call’s highlights and other essential details.
The Call for Pre-proposals follows the approval granted during the 1st meeting of the Mission Governing Board (MGB) of the National Quantum Mission. The MGB sanctioned the invitation for proposals to establish four technology hubs under the NQM in a consortia format.
The Union Cabinet had previously greenlit the National Quantum Mission on April 19, 2023. With a total outlay of Rs. 6003.65 Crore for an eight-year period, the mission aspires to foster scientific and industrial research and development in Quantum Technology (QT). By accelerating quantum technology-led economic growth, the NQM aims to position India as a global leader in the development of Quantum Technologies & Applications (QTA).
