Bhubaneswar: Kesinga Railway Station in Odisha’s Kalahandi district has been redeveloped into a modern, accessible and passenger-friendly transit hub under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with an investment of around ₹22 crore. The upgraded station is among the 57 railway stations in Odisha being modernised under the scheme and is one of the stations being dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister.
The redevelopment has significantly enhanced passenger amenities and operational infrastructure, with the project aimed at improving travel convenience while strengthening rail connectivity in western Odisha.
The upgraded station now features a modernised station building, a new second entry for smoother passenger movement, a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge equipped with three lifts, improved platforms and shelters, wider approach roads, pedestrian pathways and an upgraded drainage system. Passenger facilities have also been expanded with improved toilets, a retiring room and dormitory.
Officials said the station has been designed with universal accessibility in mind, ensuring barrier-free movement for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and families. Enhanced circulation areas and improved public spaces are expected to make travel safer and more convenient.
Established in 1931, Kesinga Railway Station is located on the Raipur–Vizianagaram line of the East Coast Railway and has long served as a key rail link connecting Kalahandi with major cities in Odisha and neighbouring states. The station plays an important role in supporting passenger movement, trade and regional economic activity.
The modernisation is expected to further improve connectivity for residents, students, farmers, traders and tourists while supporting the district’s agriculture, commerce and tourism sectors.
Kalahandi is known for its rich tribal heritage, traditional handloom and handicrafts, colourful festivals and the internationally recognised Ghumura dance. Railway officials said the redeveloped station now offers a modern gateway to the culturally vibrant region while providing improved travel facilities for visitors.
Indian Railways and East Coast Railway said the redevelopment reflects their continued focus on creating modern, inclusive and future-ready railway stations with improved passenger amenities, universal accessibility and sustainable infrastructure to support regional growth.
