Bhubaneswar: With temperatures rising across the state, the Odisha government has directed all schools to reschedule their class timings to morning hours to safeguard students from heatwave conditions.
As per the order, all educational institutions will now function from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM with immediate effect from April 2 until the commencement of summer vacation. The directive has been issued by N. Thirumala Naik, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the School and Mass Education Department, to District Collectors for implementation across government, government-aided, and private schools.
According to the official communication, the revised timing will be followed every year during this period, with all previous instructions standing modified. Schools will revert to their regular schedules after the summer vacation. However, District Collectors and Magistrates have been authorised to further adjust timings based on local heatwave conditions.
In addition to the timing change, the department has issued a set of mandatory precautionary measures to ensure student safety during extreme weather.
Schools have been directed to maintain a continuous supply of safe drinking water and repair tube wells within campuses wherever required. A fixed “water bell” will be introduced daily to remind students and staff to stay hydrated.
Institutions must also stock adequate Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets and provide them immediately to anyone showing signs of heat-related illness. Outdoor activities, including sports and assemblies, have been strictly restricted to minimise exposure to peak heat hours.
The department has also asked schools to sensitise parents to ensure that children carry full water bottles and to spread awareness through school communication channels. Additionally, time will be allocated during school hours to educate students on heatwave precautions and safety practices.
The move comes as part of the state’s annual measures to address rising summer temperatures and protect the health and well-being of students. District administrations have been instructed to ensure strict compliance and take necessary steps for effective implementation on the ground.
