Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Police on Thursday wrapped up its week-long mega exhibition on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the capital, attracting more than one lakh visitors and generating widespread public interest in India’s new criminal laws.
Held at the IDCO Exhibition Ground, the exhibition aimed to familiarise citizens with the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced several colonial-era criminal laws in the country from July 1, 2024. Due to the overwhelming response, the exhibition was extended by two days following the direction of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
The closing ceremony was attended by Surama Padhy, Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Pipili MLA Asrit Pattnayak, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Saswat Mishra, Additional Chief Secretary of the Labour and ESI Department Chithra Arumugam and actor Sabyasachi Mishra, among others.
Conceptualised under the guidance of Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, the exhibition offered visitors an immersive experience of the criminal justice system through a series of interactive pavilions. These showcased various stages of investigation and trial, including crime scene management, police control room operations, forensic analysis, court procedures and correctional facilities.
Demonstrations by specialised units such as the Special Operations Group and the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force were also organised. Visitors also witnessed displays on the historic Odisha Police carrier pigeon service and modern emergency communication systems used in policing.
People from diverse backgrounds, including students, legal professionals, government officials, workers and members of self-help groups, attended the exhibition. Cultural performances and dramatic skits in Odia were staged to explain the provisions of the new criminal laws in a simple and engaging manner.
The exhibition was conducted under the supervision of Vinyotosh Mishra, Director General of Police, Crime Branch. Officials said the initiative helped strengthen public awareness about the new criminal justice framework while promoting greater trust and engagement between the police and citizens.
