New Delhi: Taking a firm stance against obscene and unlawful digital material, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has directed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access to 25 OTT platforms accused of streaming sexually explicit content.
The ministry’s order comes under the framework of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which mandate intermediaries to take down unlawful and inappropriate content. The decision aims to restrict online circulation of content that violates Indian cultural values and legal standards.
Platforms such as Big Shots App, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix, and Triflicks are among those named in the directive.
According to officials, the content hosted on these platforms was found to be in breach of Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
MIB has also informed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), requesting support to ensure all ISPs comply with the ban. Media reports indicate that the ministry’s action demonstrates a commitment to tightening digital oversight and enforcing content standards.
Earlier in April, the Supreme Court heard a petition seeking a blanket ban on sexually explicit content available on OTT and social media platforms. While the court clarified that such regulation falls under the executive’s domain, it acknowledged the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms.
With this latest step, the government has signaled that unchecked streaming of indecent material will no longer be tolerated, and digital platforms must adhere to India’s regulatory frameworks or face strict consequences.
