Bhubaneswar: As changing weather conditions grip Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Yellow’ warning for light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in several districts over the coming days. The unsettled weather is expected to continue until April 14, with varying intensity across the state.
The IMD’s forecast indicates that light rain or thundershowers are likely in the afternoon or evening hours at isolated locations across coastal and interior districts, beginning April 9. Districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Puri, Ganjam, and Gajapati are expected to experience these conditions.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected in these regions. By April 9 and 10, the IMD predicts the weather system will extend to districts like Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Koraput, Rayagada, Angul, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur. Gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h are likely in some areas during this period.
Rainfall activity is likely to increase slightly on April 10 and 11, with a few places in the aforementioned districts experiencing moderate showers. Wind speeds may pick up to 40–50 km/h at isolated locations, especially in interior Odisha.
Further, from April 12 to 14, more widespread showers are expected to affect districts such as Kandhamal and Malkangiri, while other parts of the state could see isolated rain or remain dry.
The shift in weather is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD, this system, along with an associated cyclonic circulation, is likely to move in a north-northwestward direction, maintaining its strength before gradually weakening over the central Bay of Bengal.
Amidst this, the state will also witness a temperature dip of 2–3°C over the next three days, followed by a rise of 2–4°C thereafter. However, some western districts such as Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Sonepur, Bolangir, and Titlagarh may continue to experience scorching conditions with maximum temperatures hovering around or above 40°C.
