Debrigarh Sanctuary’s Winter Hiking Program Combines Adventure, Wildlife, and Stargazing

Sambalpur: Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Odisha, is offering nature enthusiasts a month-long Winter Hiking Program throughout December 2024. This immersive initiative combines adventure with education, providing participants with the opportunity to explore the sanctuary’s lush landscapes and Hirakud Wetland Islands through hiking, wildlife observation, and stargazing.

The program brings together 70 hikers from across India, including participants from Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Odisha. Structured into five groups, the experience includes three days of hiking over 16 kilometers, with altitudes ranging from 400 to 500 meters, and two nights of camping, one of which is set on Cattle Island, known for its strict zero-trash policy and eco-friendly bio-toilets.

Throughout the journey, hikers are guided by experts such as Piyush Bhue, a naturalist specializing in bird identification, and Bhabesh Sahu, a patrolling squad member from Kulunda village renowned for his expertise in snake safety.

Participants traverse the sanctuary’s rich habitats, encountering a variety of species. Birds like mynas, hornbills, bulbuls, doves, hoopoes, and partridges are a common sight, while colorful butterflies, including painted jezebels, banded peacocks, and common roses, add vibrant beauty to the trails.

Animal sightings, including herds of bison, leopards, and bears, occur in their undisturbed natural environments. The program also delves into snake identification, with species such as pythons, cobras, kraits, and sand boas frequently observed. Sahu shares essential safety measures to minimize risks while exploring the jungle.

A standout feature of the program is the stargazing experience on Cattle Island, situated within the unpolluted expanse of the Hirakud Wetland’s dark skies. Guided by experts from India Hikes and Debrigarh, participants learn to identify constellations such as Ursa Major, Orion, and the Milky Way, alongside prominent stars like Polaris and Sirius.

The Winter Hiking Program emphasizes fostering a deep connection with nature by blending education with hands-on experiences. It encourages conservation and environmental responsibility, ensuring minimal ecological impact through a “leave no trace” approach.
