Odisha Govt Sets Task Force to Revive Aska Cooperative Sugar Mill

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has launched a major initiative to revive and modernize the historic Aska Cooperative Sugar Mill, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announcing the formation of a dedicated task force. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan on Tuesday, where the Chief Minister emphasized the mill’s importance to farmers and the regional economy.

The task force, comprising senior officials from the Departments of Agriculture, Finance, Cooperatives, Excise, and Water Resources, will study advanced systems in states like Maharashtra before submitting recommendations for the mill’s revival.

Established in 1956, the Aska Cooperative Sugar Mill began production in 1963 and later expanded to manufacture by-products alongside sugar. Despite its historical significance and contribution to the local economy, the mill has faced financial challenges in recent years. Reviving it has now become a priority for the state government.

Highlighting the mill’s importance to farmers, the Chief Minister stated, “This sugar mill has a long history and has supported many farmers in the region. Reviving and improving its operations is essential for the socio-economic growth of the area.”

The proposed task force will study successful models in other states, particularly Maharashtra, known for its robust sugar industry. Based on its findings, a comprehensive plan for modernization and financial turnaround will be implemented.

The meeting saw participation from Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Minister for Excise Prithviraj Harichandan, Minister for Handlooms and Cooperatives Pradeep Bala Samanta, and Minister for Industries Sampad Chandra Swain. Aska MLA Saroj Kumar Padhi, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, and other senior officials also provided insights and suggestions.

The revival plan aims to enhance production capacity, introduce modern technologies, and diversify operations to make the mill profitable. The Chief Minister emphasized that this initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture.
