Odisha to Celebrate Year-Long 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab

Bhubaneswar: The 125th birth anniversary of the esteemed statesman and nationalist leader, Utkal Keshari Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, will be celebrated throughout the year, commencing with a three-day event in Bhubaneswar from November 21 to 23. The year-long observance aims to honor Dr. Mahatab’s contributions to Odisha’s identity and legacy, highlighting his pivotal role in shaping the state.

A high-level committee from the Department of Oriya Language, Literature, and Culture met at the state guest house to outline the plans for the grand jubilee. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized that Dr. Mahatab’s influence transcends political affiliations, pledging a celebratory year that would inspire all Odias. “Odisha will mark 100 years in 2036, and Dr. Mahatab’s name will be revered as one of the key architects of a prosperous state,” he stated.

Key proposals include a biopic on Dr. Mahatab, intended for screening in educational institutions, and the establishment of a memorial museum at his birthplace in Agarpada, Bhadrak district. A statue of Dr. Mahatab will also be erected there, transforming the site into a tourist destination.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan underlined the importance of this celebration as an opportunity to bolster ‘Odia asmita’ (Odia pride), drawing inspiration from Dr. Mahatab’s life. “The next decade leading to Odisha’s centenary offers a chance to revive and spread the collective identity of the Odia people,” he said.

The Chief Minister announced the formation of sub-committees to organize year-long events across the state, facilitating research and the publication of untold stories from Dr. Mahatab’s life. Several of his books will be republished in Hindi, English, and other regional languages, along with the release of a comprehensive multi-volume book on his legacy.

Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahatab reflected on the multifaceted life of Dr. Mahatab, calling attention to his roles as a fighter, administrator, social reformer, and unifier. He proposed the creation of memorials in Hadgarh and Bhubaneswar and highlighted the inclusion of Dr. Mahatab’s plays and literary works throughout the year’s programming.

Other initiatives discussed include:

  • Establishing a special gallery in the State Museum.
  • Hosting exhibitions featuring Dr. Mahatab’s books, photos, and paintings.
  • Creating university chairs named after Dr. Mahatab.
  • Organizing lectures, essay competitions, and seminars both in Odisha and metropolitan cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai.

Attendees of the meeting included Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, Health Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, Sports and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, and Ekamra MLA Babu Singh.

The year-long commemoration is poised to celebrate the life and achievements of Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab, ensuring that future generations understand and appreciate his enduring contributions to Odisha and India.
