Union Minister Proposes Renaming Ravenshaw University

Bhubaneswar: Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has stirred controversy with his proposal to rename Ravenshaw University, one of Odisha’s most esteemed educational institutions. The suggestion has sparked a robust debate among students, alumni, and the wider public.

Speaking at a recent event, Pradhan argued for the university’s name to be changed to honor local heroes and cultural icons, reflecting Odisha’s rich heritage and significant figures. “What was Ravenshaw sir doing during the Great Famine of 1866, also known as the Na-Anka Durbhikshya?” Pradhan questioned, referring to the historical period when the university’s namesake, Thomas Edward Ravenshaw, was Commissioner of Cuttack Division. He clarified that this is his personal opinion and not an official stance.

Founded as Ravenshaw College in 1868, the institution was named after Thomas Edward Ravenshaw, who played a role in the administration of the Cuttack Division. Over the years, it has grown into a leading center for higher education in Odisha, known for its academic excellence and vibrant campus life.
