Kochi: In a significant stride towards bolstering its naval capabilities, the Indian Navy has taken delivery of the Mahabali, a 25T Bollard Pull (BP) Tug. The ceremony, held on February 2, 2024, was attended by Rear Admiral Subir Mukherjee, NM, ASY(Kochi), and marks a proud moment for the “Make in India” initiative.
The contract for the construction and delivery of three 25T BP Tugs was successfully concluded with M/s Shoft Shipyard Pvt Ltd (M/s SSPL), an MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises). This development aligns seamlessly with the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative of the Government of India, emphasizing self-reliance and indigenous manufacturing.
The Mahabali and its sister tugs, built under the classification rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), will significantly contribute to the operational commitments of the Indian Navy. These tugs are specifically designed to provide crucial assistance to naval ships and submarines during berthing and un-berthing processes, as well as maneuvering in confined waters.
In addition to supporting naval operations, the Mahabali and its counterparts will enhance the Navy’s firefighting capabilities. They are equipped to provide afloat firefighting assistance to ships alongside, whether at anchorage or during other maritime activities. Moreover, the tugs possess the capability to conduct limited Search and Rescue Operations, further expanding their utility.
The Mahabali’s induction into the Indian Navy underscores the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in defense production and strengthens its maritime capabilities. The vessel represents a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the indigenous manufacturing capabilities of the Indian defense sector.
