Bhubaneswar: The inaugural World Odia Language Conference is set to take place at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar from February 3rd to 5th. Organized to delve into the rich history, contemporary status, and future prospects of the Odia language, which holds the esteemed position of one of India’s classical languages, the conference aims to set forth objectives for its continued growth and promotion.
Anticipated participants include students, educators, researchers, intellectuals, and language enthusiasts. The event will host a diverse array of programs designed to foster a deeper connection with the Odia language and instill a sense of pride among attendees.
Simultaneously, the Department of Housing and Urban Development has decided to celebrate the Odia Language Convention in all urban areas across the state. Director Municipal Administration, Sangamjit Naik, communicated this decision through a letter to the commissioners of municipal corporations and the executive officers of municipalities and NACs.
In his letter, Naik emphasized the need to extend the reach of the World Odia Language Conference to all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state. To achieve this, he proposed various programs, including the display of portraits of renowned poets, writers, and linguists who have significantly contributed to the development of Odia language and culture.
To foster local engagement, programs encouraging Odia research, scholarly activities, and intellectual pursuits will be organized. School and college students will have the opportunity to participate in debate and essay competitions, promoting linguistic awareness and appreciation.
A notable suggestion in Naik’s letter is the introduction of the “Odia Asmita Rath,” a procession that would traverse different wards of urban self-governing bodies to highlight the cultural essence of Odia identity. The directive also stressed the importance of promoting the use of the Odia language in signboards, billboards, and hoardings.
During a virtual discussion, representatives from all ULBs expressed their commitment to preserving Odia language, literature, and culture. The upcoming World Odia Language Conference and the associated city-wide celebrations are poised to ignite a renewed sense of pride and enthusiasm for the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Odisha.
