8th Edition of India-Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise KAZIND-2024 Commences in Uttarakhand

Auli, Uttarakhand: The 8th edition of the India-Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise, KAZIND-2024, kicked off today at the Surya Foreign Training Node in Auli, Uttarakhand. The exercise, running from September 30 to October 13, 2024, continues the annual series of joint exercises that have been held since 2016. Last year’s edition took place in Otar, Kazakhstan, from October 30 to November 11, 2023.

The Indian contingent, comprising 120 personnel, is being led by a battalion from the KUMAON Regiment of the Indian Army, alongside other arms and services, with support from the Indian Air Force. The Kazakhstan contingent is primarily represented by personnel from the Land Forces and Airborne Assault Troopers.

The primary objective of KAZIND-2024 is to strengthen the joint military capabilities of both nations to carry out counter-terrorism operations in a sub-conventional scenario, as outlined under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise will focus on operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain, aiming to achieve a high degree of physical fitness, rehearse tactical drills, and share best practices between the two forces.

The tactical drills planned for the exercise include joint responses to terrorist actions, establishing a Joint Command Post, setting up an Intelligence and Surveillance Centre, securing helipad and landing sites, and executing Special Heliborne Operations and combat free fall. Additionally, the exercise will explore the use of drones and counter-drone systems, as well as conduct cordon and search operations.

Joint Exercise KAZIND-2024 is designed to enhance interoperability, strengthen camaraderie, and promote a deeper understanding between the Indian and Kazakh armed forces. It will also facilitate the exchange of techniques, tactics, and procedures for conducting joint military operations. This exercise is expected to significantly enhance defence cooperation, further boosting the already strong bilateral relations between the two friendly nations.
