82 Young Artists Honoured with Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar at Grand Ceremony in New Delhi

New Delhi: The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar Ceremony, recognising outstanding young artists in the performing arts, began on a vibrant note at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, with the inauguration by distinguished dignitaries from the Ministry of Culture. The ceremony, which honours exceptional recipients from 2022 and 2023, saw the conferring of awards on 82 young artists from across the country, who have made remarkable contributions to the fields of music, dance, drama, folk, and tribal arts.

The inaugural session was graced by Arunish Chawla, Secretary, Ministry of Culture; Uma Nanduri, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Culture; Joravarsinh Jadav, Vice-chairman, Sangeet Natak Akademi; Dr. Sandhya Purecha, Chairman, Sangeet Natak Akademi; and Raju Das, Secretary, Sangeet Natak Akademi.

In his address, Arunish Chawla expressed his delight, saying, “It is truly heartwarming to see this year’s awardees represent the diverse cultural heritage of India, hailing from every region, state, and community. The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar acknowledges their exceptional contributions to the performing arts, and the Government of India is proud to celebrate their achievements.”

Dr. Sandhya Purecha, Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, also shared her thoughts, saying, “Today’s young dancers have demonstrated unwavering dedication to their craft. In a world full of distractions and the influences of globalization, these awardees have chosen to pursue their art with conviction. Their passion and commitment to mastering their craft is evident in their performances.”

The award ceremony was followed by a festival of performing arts, showcasing the talents of the awardees at three prominent venues in New Delhi: Meghdoot Theatre Complex, Rabindra Bhawan, and Vivekanand Auditorium at Kathak Kendra, from November 22 to 26, 2024.

Instituted in 2006, the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar is named after the legendary Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan and aims to encourage and motivate young performing artists in India. The award is given annually to those under the age of 40 in the fields of music, dance, drama, folk & tribal arts, and puppetry. It carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000, a plaque, and an angavastram.

The initiative serves as a platform for young artists to gain recognition for their exceptional work, further motivating them to continue contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of India. Through the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, the Sangeet Natak Akademi continues its mission to nurture and celebrate young talent in the diverse world of performing arts.
