72 Student Suicides Reported in Odisha Schools and Colleges Over Five Years

Bhubaneswar: A total of 72 cases of student suicides have been reported in government and private schools and colleges across Odisha over the last five years, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed the Odisha Assembly on Monday.

In a written response to a question raised by Barabati-Cuttack MLA Sofia Firdous, the Chief Minister revealed that these cases occurred between 2020 and February 28, 2025.

Majhi stated that investigations have identified multiple factors contributing to these tragic incidents, including mental pressure, harassment, academic stress, domestic conflicts, depression over exams and relationships, homesickness, parental restrictions, and psychological issues. In some cases, students took extreme steps due to misunderstandings with friends or denial of phone usage in school hostels.

The rising cases of student suicides have raised concerns about mental health awareness and support systems in educational institutions. Experts have emphasized the need for stronger counseling services in schools and colleges to address academic stress and emotional well-being.
