World Forestry Day: Odisha Achieves Remarkable Growth in Forest Cover

Bhubaneswar: Celebrating World Forestry Day, Odisha reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. The state has made remarkable strides in expanding its forest and tree cover, gaining 893 square kilometers over the past two assessment years, as per the Forest Survey of India Report 2021.

At an event held at Jayadev Bhawan, officials emphasized the crucial role of the Forest Department in safeguarding nature and wildlife. Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Department, Satyabrata Sahu, emphasized the significance of protecting forests and wild animals for the safety and security of the environment. “Future generations will not forgive us unless we preserve nature for them,” stated Sahu, highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship.

Chief Guest, Sahu, underscored the importance of maintaining a balance between development and nature, urging Forest Department officials and staff to play a pivotal role in this endeavor. The State’s forest growth not only enhances biodiversity but also directly impacts factors like rainfall, surface drinking water, and pollution levels, making afforestation efforts paramount.

PCCF & HoFF, Odisha, Debidutta Biswal, shed light on the objectives of World Forestry Day and this year’s theme, “Forest & Innovation.” Emphasizing the need to eliminate plastic pollution from forests, he outlined the Department’s initiatives to promote sustainability. Additionally, PCCF (WL) Susanta Nanda stressed the importance of wildlife conservation in preserving ecosystems, while PCCF (P&SM) Prafull Kumar Mallik highlighted forests’ global significance.

The State Forestry Award-2024 recognized the exemplary service of 40 Forest field personnel, including Forest Guards, Foresters, and Forest Rangers. Their outstanding contributions to conservation efforts were acknowledged during the ceremony. Furthermore, a book titled “Highlights of Odisha Forestry Sector-2024” was unveiled, showcasing the state’s forestry achievements.

A photo exhibition showcasing Odisha’s rich wildlife, Nandankanan Zoo, eco-tourism initiatives, and medicinal plants, among others, provided attendees with insights into the state’s diverse natural heritage and conservation endeavors.
