
Indian weightlifter and Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu wins gold in women’s 49kg weightlifting event at the ongoing Commonwealth Games at Birmingham on Saturday.
The 27-year old won the first gold for the country at the event. She lifted a total of 201 kg to win the medal. She lifted 109kg in her first attempt in the clean and jerk round.
Mauritius’ Roilya Ranaivosoa won silver by lifting a total of 172 kg, while Canada’s Hannah Kaminsky won the bronze medal, lifting a total of 171kg.
This year she was defending her title as she won gold in 2018 Commonwealth Games. In 2014 she had won silver in the same category.
