Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan Takes Over as 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff

New Delhi: Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan formally assumed charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) on Friday, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished naval career spanning over three decades.

Soon after taking charge, Vice Admiral Vatsayan paid tribute to India’s fallen heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. The solemn gesture reflected his deep respect for the armed forces and the sacrifices made in the line of duty.

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988, Vice Admiral Vatsayan is a specialist in gunnery and missile systems. He is an alumnus of premier military institutions including the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington; the Naval War College, Goa; and the National Defence College, New Delhi.

Over the course of his career, he has commanded a wide array of vessels, including a Coast Guard Inshore Patrol Vessel, missile vessels INS Vibhuti and INS Nashak, the missile corvette INS Kuthar, and the guided missile frigate INS Sahyadri. His leadership at sea has been complemented by strategic roles ashore, where he contributed to naval personnel policy, long-term planning, and inter-service coordination.

His staff assignments have included key posts such as Joint Director and Director of Personnel (Policy), Director of Naval Plans for perspective planning, and Principal Director of Naval Plans. He also served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) after being promoted to flag rank in 2018. He later went on to command the Eastern Fleet—one of the Navy’s most operationally active formations.

In recognition of his distinguished service, Vice Admiral Vatsayan was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2021. That same year, he was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command, where he played a critical role in enhancing operational readiness, manpower training, and infrastructure development.

More recently, he served as the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations), and later as DCIDS (Policy, Planning and Force Development) at the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff. In these roles, he made significant contributions to tri-service coordination, defence planning, and indigenisation initiatives—key components of India’s integrated military strategy.

Congratulating him on the occasion, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, extended best wishes on behalf of HQ IDS and expressed confidence in his leadership as the Navy continues its path of modernization and strategic evolution.

Vice Admiral Vatsayan steps into his new role at a time when the Indian Navy is expanding its capabilities and strengthening its presence in the Indo-Pacific region. His extensive operational and policy experience is expected to play a vital role in shaping the Navy’s future trajectory.
