Vedanta Kalinga Lancers Gear Up for Home Leg as Arthur Van Doren Hails Bhubaneswar’s Hockey Spirit

Bhubaneswar: As the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers take the field at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium on Saturday, the occasion carries significance beyond league standings. With the final leg of the Men’s Hero Hockey India League 2025–26 set to unfold in Bhubaneswar, the Lancers’ captain Arthur Van Doren believes the team is returning to a city that offers one of the most electrifying atmospheres in world hockey.

Bhubaneswar, widely regarded as the spiritual home of Indian hockey, will host the decisive phase of the league, and for the Belgian defender, the venue represents both competitive advantage and emotional resonance. Van Doren said Odisha’s deep-rooted love for hockey creates an environment that players genuinely look forward to, particularly when the team is in strong form.

Despite the Lancers setting the pace this season, the captain underlined that the focus remains firmly on continuous improvement. He stressed that the team’s objective is to keep growing, refine their game and push their limits to reach full potential, rather than be satisfied with early success.

The home crowd, Van Doren believes, plays a decisive role in lifting performance levels. He described the Kalinga Stadium spectators as a powerful force that fuels players through demanding moments on the pitch, noting that the energy and volume of support in Bhubaneswar often feels far greater than comparable crowds elsewhere.

Acknowledging the expectations that come with playing at home, Van Doren said pressure is an inherent part of leadership and success. He emphasised the importance of focusing on team strengths and collective effort, pointing out that hockey’s team-oriented nature ensures players support each other through both strong and difficult days.

Bhubaneswar also holds special personal significance for the Lancers’ captain. It was at the same venue in 2018 that Belgium lifted their maiden Hockey World Cup, a memory he said remains close to his heart. He added that the knowledge and passion of hockey fans in the city make it especially welcoming for international players.

Within the squad, Van Doren praised the commitment and rapid development of Indian players, particularly the younger talents. He highlighted the progress of Deepak Pradhan and Rosan Kujur, noting significant growth in their tactical understanding and game awareness, while also applauding Dilpreet Singh for his refined skills and creativity on the field.

Off the pitch, the Belgian captain said his fondness for Odisha extends to its cuisine, revealing dal makhani with roti as his favourite Indian dish.

As the business end of the Hero Hockey India League begins, the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers will draw strength from form, focus and a home crowd that lives and breathes hockey. All matches of the league will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Ten 1, Sony Sports Ten 3 and DD Sports, with live streaming available on Waves and the Hockey India League YouTube channel.
