US Ambassador Eric Garcetti Embarks on Spiritual Journey, Discusses Direct Flights to Amritsar with SGPC President

Amritsar:  In a significant display of cultural exchange and reverence, the Ambassador of the United States of America (USA) to India, Eric Garcetti, accompanied by his wife Amy Wakeland and a family member, paid a visit to the sacred Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib in Amritsar. The dignitaries actively participated in spiritual rituals, including the revered Parikrama (circumambulation) and Sewa (voluntary service) at Langar Sri Guru Ramdas Ji.

During his visit, Ambassador Garcetti, known for his hands-on approach, performed Sewa with his own hands, underlining his respect for Sikh traditions. Following the spiritual activities, he proceeded to Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib, where he was honored with a garland of flowers and Patasha prasad by the Hazuri Singhs.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Garcetti and his family, presenting them with a golden model of Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib, books, and shawls at the information center of Sri Darbar Sahib. The meeting between Mr. Dhami and Ambassador Garcetti delved into various topics, fostering dialogue and understanding.

In the discussion, President Dhami raised the prospect of initiating direct flights from the USA to Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar. Acknowledging the convenience and benefits it would bring to the Sikh and Punjabi community residing in the United States, Ambassador Garcetti responded positively to the proposal.

In the visitor book, Ambassador Garcetti expressed his profound experience, stating, “There are a few places in the world that are truly sacred – this Golden Temple is right there at the top of that list. You feel not only the holiness of this place but how the generous service of the people defines not only the world as it is but as it can be. May the deep friendships between the United States and Sikhism always bring peace to our world. With deep respect and friendships.”

President Dhami shared that Ambassador Garcetti was honored upon his arrival, emphasizing the strong bond between Sikhs in California, the Ambassador’s home state. Ambassador Garcetti, cognizant of the significant Sikh and Punjabi diaspora in the United States, has been urged to make special efforts to commence direct flights from the USA to Amritsar, providing convenience and reducing travel costs for the community members.

The visit underscores the importance of cultural exchange and the potential for enhanced connectivity between the two nations, fostering goodwill and mutual understanding.
