Union Ministers Announce National Health Project to Enhance Well-being of Tribal Students through Ayurvedic Interventions

New Delhi: Union Minister of Ayush and Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized the goal of making India self-reliant in health by declaring a joint National Level Project of Health Screening and Management through Ayurvedic Interventions. The initiative, announced in New Delhi, is a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Ayush, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and ICMR-NIRTH Jabalpur, targeting over 20,000 Tribal Students in Eklavya Model Residential Schools.

In the presence of Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda, both ministers highlighted the significance of addressing health needs in tribal areas. Sonowal asserted that the initiative aims to make every Indian disease-free and aligns with the vision of a self-reliant nation. The project focuses on major health concerns such as Malnutrition, Iron deficiency Anaemia, and Sickle Cell Diseases among students aged 10-18 in identified schools across 14 states.

The Ayush Minister highlighted the effectiveness of Ayurveda in addressing prevalent health needs and improving overall well-being. The project’s screening process will encompass general health conditions, with a special focus on Anaemia, Haemoglobinopathies, Malnutrition, and Tuberculosis. The collaborative effort aims to instill healthy lifestyle practices among students based on Ayurvedic principles.

Arjun Munda emphasized the importance of traditional medicines in citizens’ lives and suggested the incorporation of medicinal plant gardens in schools. He expressed confidence that the project would contribute to achieving a healthier and developed India by nurturing the health of young children.

The announcement marks a significant step towards holistic healthcare and disease prevention, aligning with the principles of Ayurveda. A Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2022 paved the way for this collaborative initiative, showcasing the commitment of both ministries to tribal development.

During the event, Union Ministers unveiled an e-book and released a brochure outlining their joint health initiatives, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive healthcare and sustainable well-being for tribal students in Eklavya Model Residential Schools.
