Union Minister for Jal Shakti Releases Comprehensive Flood Impact Assessment

New Delhi: In a significant step towards enhancing flood management and mitigation in India, Union Minister for Jal Shakti,  C.R. Paatil, released a pivotal publication titled ‘Assessment of Area Affected due to Floods in India,’ brought out by the Central Water Commission (CWC) in New Delhi today.

The CWC, recognized as India’s premier technical organization in the field of water resources, conducted an extensive scientific study capturing flood events using satellite imagery over the period from 1986 to 2022. This publication reveals that approximately 20.5 million hectares (Mha) of land have been protected from floods through various structural measures. However, the analysis also indicates that about 21 Mha of land has been affected by floods during the same period.

Providing detailed district-wise data on flood-affected areas, this publication is expected to be a crucial resource for the development of early warning systems, flood management strategies, emergency response planning, and infrastructure development aimed at mitigating flood damages. This detailed information will aid planners, policymakers, disaster managers, relief agencies, and academicians in implementing effective flood protection and mitigation measures.

Union Minister C.R. Paatil emphasized the importance of this study in improving the nation’s preparedness and response to flood events. “This publication is a testament to our commitment to understanding and addressing the challenges posed by floods. The data and insights provided will significantly enhance our ability to protect lives, property, and livelihoods from flood impacts,” Paatil remarked.
