New Delhi: Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, chaired a high-level consultation meeting today with key stakeholders, including the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), National Sports Federations (NSFs), and National Sports Promotion Organisations (NSPOs), to discuss the Draft National Sports Governance Bill 2024.
The meeting, held in New Delhi, was also attended by Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, IOA President Smt. P.T. Usha, and representatives from the Mission Olympic Cell and Sports Control Boards of Central Ministries.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the government’s dedication to creating a transparent and accountable sports governance structure that aligns with global standards, including the Olympic and Paralympic Charter. “The Draft National Sports Governance Bill 2024 is a milestone in our mission to build a robust and transparent sports governance structure in India,” he said. “The active involvement of various stakeholders and the public is crucial for shaping policies that reflect the aspirations of our sports community.”
He further highlighted the government’s vision of building a Viksit Bharat by 2047, where sports will be a key pillar of national pride and development. “By empowering athlete-centric federations, introducing the Safe Sports Policy, and establishing an Appellate Sports Tribunal, we are creating a framework that elevates our athletes and strengthens India’s position on the global sports stage.”
The consultation saw active participation from representatives of NSFs, NSPOs, and the IOA, who offered their perspectives on the proposed governance reforms. Discussions focused on athlete welfare, safeguarding athletes’ rights, and ensuring transparency in the administration of sports bodies. Stakeholders also shared their thoughts on enhancing India’s global sports presence and streamlining the functioning of sports organizations.
Dr. Mandaviya assured attendees that their suggestions would be carefully considered in refining the draft bill, reiterating the ministry’s commitment to making India a global sports powerhouse. He also encouraged stakeholders and the general public to continue providing feedback, ensuring that the voices of athletes, administrators, and experts shape the final version of the bill.
The Draft National Sports Governance Bill 2024 lays out a comprehensive framework for ethical governance, athlete development, and effective dispute resolution in Indian sports. By incorporating stakeholder insights, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports aims to create a progressive and sustainable governance model that ensures fair play and inclusivity.
