Union Home Minister Amit Shah Inaugurates 59th DGsP/IGsP Conference in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, inaugurated the 59th Directors General of Police/Inspectors General of Police (DGsP/IGsP) Conference in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, today. The high-profile three-day event is being held in a hybrid format, with senior police leaders from across the country attending both in person and virtually.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the proceedings on the second and third days of the conference. Other notable attendees include the National Security Advisor, Union Ministers of State for Home, and the Union Home Secretary.

Amit Shah began the event by conferring Police Medals for Meritorious Service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau and releasing the Ministry of Home Affairs’ annual book on the ‘Ranking of Police Stations 2024.’ The Union Home Minister also awarded trophies to the three best-performing police stations in the country.

In his inaugural address, Shah commended the police leadership for ensuring the smooth conduct of the General Elections 2024 and the successful rollout of the three new Criminal Laws, which he described as transformative. He emphasized that these new laws shift the focus of the criminal justice system from punishment to justice, drawing inspiration from Indian traditions and values.

Shah highlighted significant improvements in the security landscape, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, the North-East, and Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected states. He attributed these advancements to the collaborative efforts of the nation’s security agencies and urged them to continue their work with a zero-tolerance approach towards emerging challenges.

The Home Minister also outlined key areas of focus for the conference:

• Emerging security challenges along the Eastern border.
• Immigration issues and urban policing trends.
• Strategies to combat narcotics, cybercrime, and economic threats.
• Enhancing coastal security and tackling LWE.

Shah underscored the critical role of the security establishment in achieving Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047 and India’s ambition to become the third-largest global economy by 2027. He urged the police leadership to align their efforts with these national goals.

Over the next two days, the country’s top police officials will deliberate on a comprehensive roadmap to address existing and emerging national security challenges. The conference will also review the implementation progress of the new Criminal Laws and discuss innovative practices and initiatives in policing.
