Union Home Minister Amit Shah Addresses International Criminology Conference in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, delivered a keynote address at the 5th International and 44th All India Criminology Conference held at the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

During his address, Shri Amit Shah emphasized the pivotal moment in India’s criminal justice system, noting the recent overhaul of the 150-year-old original laws governing criminal justice. The Home Minister highlighted the introduction of new laws focused on ensuring timely justice delivery and enhancing the conviction rate. He underscored the integration of technology in these laws to address the pressing issues.

A significant announcement by Shri Amit Shah was the mandatory requirement for Forensic Science Officers to visit crime scenes involving offenses with a punishment of seven years or more. This strategic decision aims to simplify investigations, streamline judicial processes, and contribute to a higher conviction rate.

The Home Minister acknowledged the transformative initiatives undertaken by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, including the introduction of a new National Education Policy, the establishment of the National Forensic Science University, and the comprehensive reform of criminal justice laws after 150 years.

Highlighting the significance of forensic behavioral science, Shri Amit Shah noted its emerging role in preventing crimes. He emphasized the importance of studying behavior, integrating it into primary education, and utilizing it as a proactive measure to curb criminal activities.

A crucial development announced during the conference was the inauguration of a Digital Forensic Excellence Centre, aimed at capacity building and improving investigative capabilities.

Shri Amit Shah outlined the challenges facing India’s criminal justice system and stressed the need for a modernized police system embracing technology without compromising fundamental policing principles. He emphasized the importance of staying ahead of evolving crime patterns and the role of global uniformity in technology policies and rules.

The Home Minister expressed confidence that the integration of the criminal justice system, technology, and forensic investigation would bring about significant positive changes. He noted the role of forensic science in protecting the independence, autonomy, and fairness of investigations, bringing forth the concepts of “Ease of Justice” and “Ease of Policing.”

Shri Amit Shah concluded by encouraging the youth to engage actively in the field of forensic science, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s vision to position India at the forefront of this discipline globally. He affirmed that the recent legislative and educational reforms, coupled with advancements in forensic technology, will pave the way for India to lead in forensic science within the next five years.
