New Delhi: In a significant move to accelerate advancements in the biofuel sector and attract more investment, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today approved the modified Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana. The revamped scheme extends the implementation timeline by five years, until 2028-29, and broadens its scope to include advanced biofuels produced from lignocellulosic feedstocks such as agricultural and forestry residues, industrial waste, synthesis gas, algae, and more.
The modified JI-VAN Yojana also introduces eligibility for “bolt-on” plants and “brownfield projects,” enabling these projects to leverage their existing experience to enhance viability and efficiency. By promoting multiple technologies and feedstocks, the scheme aims to encourage innovation and technological advancements within the biofuel industry.
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goals of providing remunerative income to farmers for their agricultural residues, addressing environmental pollution, and creating local employment opportunities. Moreover, the scheme contributes to India’s energy security and self-reliance by supporting the development of advanced biofuel technologies and promoting the “Make in India” mission.
The JI-VAN Yojana also plays a crucial role in India’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2070. By fostering the development and adoption of sustainable biofuel technologies, the scheme is expected to make a significant impact on the nation’s energy landscape and its environmental goals.
