Union Cabinet Approves Ambitious Development Plan for Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi

New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at transforming travel experience and enhancing infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the comprehensive development plan for Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi. The development project, spearheaded by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), entails the construction of a new terminal building, apron extension, runway extension, parallel taxi track, and allied works.

The estimated financial outlay for the project is Rs. 2869.65 Crore, with a strategic focus on augmenting the airport’s passenger handling capacity from the current 3.9 million passengers per annum (MPPA) to 9.9 MPPA. Central to this expansion is the construction of a state-of-the-art New Terminal Building spanning 75,000 sqm. Designed to accommodate 6 million passengers annually and equipped to handle 5000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP), the terminal will showcase the rich cultural heritage of Varanasi, offering a welcoming gateway reflective of the city’s traditions.

Key components of the development plan include the extension of the runway to dimensions of 4075m x 45m, facilitating the operation of larger aircraft and ensuring operational efficiency. Additionally, a new apron capable of parking up to 20 aircraft concurrently will be constructed, addressing the growing demand for air traffic at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport.

The development of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is poised to stimulate economic growth in Varanasi and its surrounding regions. By significantly boosting passenger capacity and operational capabilities, the project is expected to enhance connectivity, promote tourism, and attract investments, thereby catalyzing overall socio-economic development in Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking on the approval, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the transformative impact of the project on Varanasi’s aviation infrastructure and regional connectivity. He underscored the government’s commitment to modernizing airport facilities across the country to meet global standards, facilitate seamless travel experiences, and contribute to India’s economic resurgence.
