Union Budget 2024-25: Financial Support for Higher Education and Research Initiatives Announced

New Delhi:  In a significant move aimed at bolstering higher education and research in India, Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, unveiled a series of key initiatives while presenting the Union Budget for 2024-25 in Parliament today.

Among the notable announcements, Smt. Sitharaman revealed a new financial support scheme for students pursuing higher education in domestic institutions. This initiative will provide loans up to ₹10 lakh to students who have previously been ineligible for any government benefits. Each year, E-vouchers will be issued directly to 1 lakh students, facilitating an annual interest subvention of 3 percent on the loan amount. This move is expected to make higher education more accessible to a broader segment of the youth.

In addition to the educational support, the Finance Minister highlighted the operationalization of the Anusandhan National Research Fund. This fund is designed to foster basic research and prototype development. The government is also setting up a mechanism to encourage private sector-driven research and innovation at a commercial scale. A substantial financing pool of ₹1 lakh crore will be established to support these endeavors, aligning with the announcement made in the interim budget.

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and advancing research and innovation across the country. The proposed initiatives aim to bridge gaps in access to education and foster a thriving research environment that can drive economic and technological growth.
