Tokyo Paralympics: India’s medal tally reaches 7, 19-year-old shooter Avani Lekhara bags historic gold

India’s medal rush continues as the contingent added four more medals on the sixth day’s morning session at Tokyo Paralympics with a historic gold for 19-year-old shooter Avani Lekhara. Javelin legend Devendra Jhajharia bags silver while his teammate Sundar Singh Gurjar grabs bronze medal, and Yogesh Kathuniya wins silver in discuss throw to take India’s medal tally to 7.

Avani creates history by becoming first Indian woman to win gold medal in Paralympics. With her superb performance in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 category, she dominated the range to grab first gold for India at Tokyo Paralympics 2020.

In Javelin Throw, two Indians finished on the podium in F-46 category today. Two-times Paralympics gold medalist Devendra Jhajharia settles for silver with his best performance of 64.35m throw while his teammate Sundar Singh Gurjar with a best throw of 64.01m grabs bronze medal. Gold in this category goes to Sri Lanka. Another Indian Ajeet Singh finishes 8th in this category.

Discuss thrower Yogesh with a best performance of 44.38m in his sixth attempt wins silver medal in Discuss Throw- F56 finals today.

On Sunday, India had won two silver and one bronze medal. Para-paddler Bhavina Patel had grabbed silver medal while High Jumper Nishad Kumar bagged silver and Discuss Thrower Vinod Kumar got a bronze medal. However, Vinod’s medal has been put on hold due to controversy following protest over disability classification.
