India Announces Squads for Upcoming Australia Tour: Gill to Replace Rohit as ODI Captain

New Delhi, October 4: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced Team India’s squads for the upcoming Tour of Australia 2025, featuring three ODIs and five T20 Internationals to be played between October 19 and November 8.

Young opener Shubman Gill will lead India in the ODI series replacing regular skipper Rohit Sharma, with Shreyas Iyer serving as his deputy. Veteran duo Rohit and Virat Kohli make their return to the ODI fold after the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Both the former skippers have retired from Tests and T20Is. The ODI squad brings together a balance of youth and experience with Rohit, Virat, and KL Rahul joining emerging talents like Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Dhruv Jurel. As regular wicketkeeper Rishab Pant has not recovered, Jurel will handle the wicketkeeping duty along with veteran Rahul.

In the T20I series, Suryakumar Yadav leads the team, with Shubman Gill named his deputy. Gill had been named vice-captain in recently concluded Asia Cup which India won defeating arch-rival Pakistan in the final. The squad showcases India’s new-age firepower, featuring Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, and wicketkeepers Jitesh Sharma and Sanju Samson. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the pace attack alongside Arshdeep Singh, while Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy add spin options.

Interestingly, Iyer’s omission from the Asia Cup that was played in T20 format drew a lot of criticism. While he has been named vice captain in the ODI squad for Australia tour, he has again been sidelined in the T20I team despite his prolific T20 forms.
