Team Gonasika Clinches Maiden Victory in Hero Hockey India League 2024-25

Rourkela: Team Gonasika secured their first victory in the Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25, defeating Hyderabad Toofans 3-1 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium on Saturday. Goals from SV Sunil (2’), Victor Charlet (33’), and Nilam Sanjeep Xess (60’) sealed the win, while Tim Brand (12’) scored the lone goal for Hyderabad Toofans.

The match began with a display of brilliance from the veteran pairing of SV Sunil and Mandeep Singh, who have been a formidable duo since the 2010s. In just the second minute, Mandeep’s agility and vision set up Sunil for a tap-in goal, giving Gonasika an early lead.

Hyderabad Toofans responded in the 12th minute when Zachary Wallace’s pass was guided towards the goal by Shilanand Lakra, eventually finding Tim Brand, who converted with a precise touch. Despite several attempts by both teams, the first quarter ended 1-1.

Gonasika appeared to take the lead again in the 22nd minute when Timothee Clement scored with a tomahawk shot. However, the TV umpire ruled it out due to a back stick violation. Defensive heroics from Hyderabad’s Devendra Walmiki prevented further Gonasika opportunities as the first half concluded.

In the second half, Gonasika struck early. After earning four consecutive penalty corners, Victor Charlet finally broke through in the 33rd minute with a powerful drag flick, reclaiming the lead for his team.

The final quarter saw Hyderabad Toofans intensify their attack, creating several opportunities. Despite their efforts, Gonasika’s defense, led by Charlet, held firm. In the dying moments of the match, Nilam Sanjeep Xess capitalized on an empty goal after Hyderabad pulled their goalkeeper in a desperate attempt to equalize, sealing the 3-1 victory.

Victor Charlet, named Player of the Match, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance:
“After three tight games, we needed these three points. All matches are competitive, and today’s win was crucial for us.”
