Tata Power and Odisha Government Launch State-of-the-Art Power Distribution Technology Centre in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: TPCODL, a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, has launched a cutting-edge Power Distribution Technology Centre in Bhubaneswar, marking a significant leap in enhancing power distribution management and operational excellence across the state.

The state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated today by K. V. Singh Deo, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Odisha, in the presence of Manoj Ahuja, Chief Secretary of Odisha, Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Power, Sanjay Banga, President of T&D at Tata Power, along with CEOs of various Tata Power-led Odisha discoms (TPCODL, TPSODL, TPWODL, TPNODL), and senior officials from both the Government and Tata Power.

This Technology Centre integrates the latest advancements in Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT) systems, designed to provide real-time monitoring and seamless management of the power distribution network. The highlight of the centre is the 24×7 Power System Control Centre (PSCC), which plays a pivotal role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply across Odisha. It aims to enhance the resilience of the distribution network, offering enhanced efficiency and operational continuity across the state.

Addressing the gathering, K. V. Singh Deo praised the project’s potential to transform Odisha into a hub of distribution excellence. “The Power Distribution Technology Centre is a key step in making Odisha a hub of distribution excellence. With advanced infrastructure and technologies, it ensures resilient and reliable power for the state. It reflects our vision for a future-ready energy ecosystem that supports both consumers and industries. I commend Tata Power for its unwavering commitment to strengthening power distribution in Odisha,” he said.

Equipped with Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), the centre guarantees improved network reliability and precise operational control. The integration of Geographical Information System (GIS) technology optimizes asset management and consumer indexing, while the Utility Data Stream (UDS) system automates energy audits, integrating GIS with billing and meter management. The centre also features advanced weather monitoring and satellite communication to ensure enhanced connectivity and smooth operations.

The PSCC will manage the 33 kV network across the state, incorporating 224 SCADA-integrated primary substations and their associated 11 kV infrastructure. This will ensure greater reliability and efficiency of the power distribution system. At the heart of the facility is a robust Data Centre that houses over 100 racks and 400+ servers, supporting essential consumer-facing applications such as websites, mobile apps, call centres, and billing systems.

In addition to its technological capabilities, the centre also strengthens disaster recovery mechanisms for all four Tata Power-led Odisha DISCOMs. The PSCC will function as the Main Control Centre (MCC) for TPCODL and as the Backup Control Centre (BCC) for TPWODL, TPSODL, and TPNODL, ensuring business continuity even in the face of potential disruptions. The BCC located in Sambalpur plays a critical role in maintaining uninterrupted operations throughout Odisha.

Since assuming responsibility for the distribution business, Tata Power-led Odisha DISCOMs have consistently invested in upgrading infrastructure to ensure reliable and sustainable power supply to consumers. The launch of the new Technology Centre is a key milestone in this journey, reinforcing the company’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies for the benefit of its consumers and stakeholders.

This cutting-edge facility is poised to enhance Odisha’s power distribution network, helping transform Tata Power-led Odisha DISCOMs into one of the most advanced distribution companies in the country. The state-of-the-art Power Distribution Technology Centre is expected to benefit over 5 crore consumers by enabling real-time network monitoring, seamless operations, and improved service delivery across the state.
