Swedish Film Crossing Wins ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal at IFFI 2024

Goa: Swedish filmmaker Levan Akin’s Crossing has been awarded the prestigious ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). Recognizing films that embody the values of peace, non-violence, and human rights, the award celebrates Crossing for its evocative portrayal of love, understanding, and social equality.

Instituted by IFFI in collaboration with the International Council for Film, Television, and Audiovisual Communication (ICFT) and UNESCO, the Gandhi Medal honours films that promote tolerance, intercultural dialogue, and a culture of peace.

The Jury praised Crossing for its “stunning cinematic qualities and thought-provoking exploration of gender equality and social understanding.” In their citation, they described it as “a stunning piece of cinema about love and understanding.”

Crossing tells the story of an elderly woman who embarks on a poignant journey from Georgia to Istanbul with a young man to find her long-lost niece. The woman, portrayed by the acclaimed actress Mzia Arabuli, uncovers connections to gender issues and equality while fulfilling a heartfelt promise.

Through its layered narrative, the film explores the bonds that transcend generations, offering a reflective commentary on social and cultural themes.

This year, ten remarkable films from various regions and genres were shortlisted for the ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal, all united by their adherence to Gandhian principles. Crossing stood out for its powerful storytelling and its universal message of empathy and understanding.
