Surama Padhy to Become New Speaker of Odisha Legislative Assembly

Bhubaneswar, June 12, 2024: Senior BJP leader and Ranpur MLA, Surama Padhy, is set to become the new Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. The announcement comes following the BJP’s victory over the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD in the 2024 state elections, securing the party’s mandate to form the government.

Surama Padhy, born on December 29, 1960, has had a distinguished political career in Odisha. Representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, she is currently the MLA from the Ranpur Assembly Constituency in Nayagarh district. Padhy’s selection as the candidate for the Speaker’s post in the 17th Assembly signifies her esteemed position within the party and her proven leadership capabilities.

Padhy’s recent electoral success is notable. She won the 2024 Odisha Legislative Assembly election from the Ranpur Assembly Constituency, defeating Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD) Satyanarayan Pradhan by a margin of 15,544 votes.
